eDelivery: AS4 message exchange protocol continues to uptake

March 23th, 2018

The continue uptake of the AS4 message is a welcoming fact for the European Commission, who is working for having a consolidate and secure Digital Single Market in Europe.

The eDelivery is one of the building blocks of the CEF. It is based on a dispersed model where every participant becomes a node using standard transport protocols and security policies. Nowadays, the secure transfer of data is a key aspect of the digital economy, since any EU policy domain requires secure, reliable and cross-border exchange of documents and data. In this sense, the official documents and sensitive information must be handled in a different way, not using common emails for exchange, since it does not ensure security. However, the adoption of the CEF eDelivery as well as the AS4 message exchange protocol, is a major step in creating the Digital Single Market in Europe and therefore, reducing operational costs for citizens, businesses and public administrations.

In this sense, the European Commission welcomes that e-Boks, the leading national solution for secure digital mail in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, is adopting the CEF eDelivery. This incorporation, would mean that AS messages would be implemented for authorities, businesses and citizens in Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, UK, Luxembourg, and Ireland (15 million users with more than 400 million transactions per year). We are facing one of the largest examples of a service provider connecting so many user at the same time.

Furthermore, e-Boks have promoted the use of AS4 within the OpenPEPPOL network by signing a Letter of Understanding with the Norwegian Agency for Public Management and eGovernment (Difi), and it will expand its strong collaboration with the public authorities in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway.

On December 2017, the PEPPOL project reached to an end successfully, enabling European business to easy communicate electronically with any European public sector in their procurement processes.
