EUROLogin Project – Which are the benefits of eID?

October 7th, 2019

LMT Group and a consortium of European participants are performing the EUROLogin project tasks and activities. The main objective of this Action is to update the eID platforms of several EDI providers in order to be aligned with the eIDAS European Regulation. The project is being co-financed by the CEF Telecom Program, managed by INEA, the Innovation and Networks Executive Agency of the European Commission.

But what does it mean to have an eID platform? And, which are the benefits? We answer your questions.

eID stands for electronic identification, which is a secure way of creating digital identities for citizens and other entities. In Europe, it is one of the main Building Blocks that the EU is promoting in order, for one Member State, to have a faster and cheaper way to recognise citizens from other EU countries. Once a citizen has his/her own electronic ID, he/she should be able to use it for any bureaucratic process in his/her country, enabling him/her to, for example, avoid lines in public offices and simply connect to the internet and request an appointment, upload official documentation, or ask for a driver’s license renewal.

Furthermore, citizens and residents from the EU should be able to do this in any European country. This is why the eIDAS Regulation was created, in order to impulse the cross-border recognition of eIDs. This is useful not only for citizens. Businesses can broaden their client base to other countries in a cheaper way, without the need of having physical offices.

In sum, electronic identification:

  • Fastens public processes for citizens.
  • It is a secure way of identification and reduces the possibilities of identity robbery.
  • It is a cheaper way for businesses to amplify their client base to other EU countries.
  • Facilitates the relocation of citizens in other Member States and the cross border mobility.
